I go to Gyeongju and Busan.

Two weekends ago, Kang and i took a 4 hour bus ride to Gyeongju from Seoul. It was a nice getaway after 5 days of hardcore studying for midterms. Gyeongju was the capital of the Shilla Kingdom (57 BC-AD935), a dynasty which lasted for almost 1000 years.

The first stop was Shilla Millenium Park, a historical themepark modeled after the sights and sounds of the Shilla dynasty. I liked it loads because i felt like i was in another world- the sandy ground, cute little huts, traditional houses (hanoks) and waterfalls. Even the toilets were super old school- wooden cubicles in the open, somewhere in the middle of the park.

The coolest thing about the park was that we could make our very own hairpins! Haha. There were many workshops to choose from- glass art, metal art, even soysauce… but Kang and i chose the easiest and prettiest one. The pressed flowers workshop! I loved the awesomely patient ahjumma who helped us with our hairpins. See the photo below for my masterpiece! Haha, not too bad right?

Early next morning, Kang and i met Jen and Vernon to go  hiking at Mt. Namsan. All i can say is it that one should never wear sneakers when hiking. And since there weren’t any marked trails, we took a different route on our way down… which led to a dead end at some pavillion thing. Ahha. Vernon had pretty good hiking sense though, so we managed to find our way out. Thank God. Just before leaving for Busan, we went to see fields of pretty yellow flowers.

Busan was spent shopping four-fifths of the time, underground at Soemyeon as well as the bustling streets of Gukje Market. It was very fruitful, which explains my self-enforced 2-weeks shopping abstinence. 🙂 Would love to travel around Korea again, like to the smaller, less developed towns. If i learn to cycle by then, sightseeing would take on a whole new level. Exciting! Who wants to come with me?!

Almost all the KU Singaporeans have fallen ill- most of us think it’s thanks to the yellow sand haze blown in from the Gobi desert in China and Mongolia, which makes Seoul’s air quality ‘hazardous’. I’m feeling all better though, after 3 days of flu. All better to cook and shop! I’ve been frying pancakes for 3 days now. One more day of pancakes and my craving for kway chap is gonna go berserk.

Quick summary of what i did these 2 weeks!

Jen, Tessie, Kang, Hh and I went to Dongdaemun for some overnight shopping on thursday night from 10pm to 2am. Just imagine a whole lot of parsa malam shops in an air-conditioned mall selling  clothing and accessories. It was fruitful! Here’re 3 must-know sentences when shopping in Korea.

1) Eol ma eh yeo? (How much?)
2) Chor nin hug seng ee ye yeo. (I am a student.)
3) Kaka chu seh yeo! (Please give me a discount!)

A really sweet Korean classmate of mine brought us to Gangnam, which is like the CBD of Korea. It is one of the most affluent areas of Seoul, filled with cafes, clubs and office buildings.

We went to a wii-bung, where we played wii games like raving rabbids and boxing for an hour.

Last Sunday was the trip to Namsan Tower.

Seoul's beautiful landscape and cute teddies from the teddy bear souveneir shop!

We also went to the one and only H&M store in South Korea, which opened a few weeks ago. A definite must-go for shopping fans! 🙂 I’m a total sucker for skirts now.

On a side note, i never knew how bizarre and uniquely-Singapore Singlish really is until now. This past month, some Koreans have guessed that we were French or Indian, whilst other foreigners have found Singlish amusing at best and weird at worst. There’s something about Singlish’s improper sentence structure and abbreviations that i find so conversationally satisfying though, not that i strongly advocate it or anything. It’s just… kind of hard to do totally without. And surprise surprise, good ol’ Wikipedia has a list of Singlish vocabulary(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish_vocabulary). Jen and i had a good laugh going through it ten minutes ago. We don’t even use one-third of those words/phrases i think.

Last but not least, happy Easter everyone! To the God who has conquered sin, death and reigns forevermore, thank You for Your love so high, so deep, so wide. Be blessed by this song!

Probably the Best Noraebang in Seoul

Korea has 3 local mega supermarkets- Homeplus, Lotte Mart and E-mart. Jen, Tessie and i went to Homeplus last week. It is humongous, complete with a foodcourt, nail parlour and a floor selling electronic goods. Supermarket sprees are really tiring without mums and grandmas. We spent almost 3 hours trying out free samples cooked by nice ahjummas, looking for the best 1-for-1 deals, and feeling emo ’cause the grapes and mangoes are too expensive to buy here.

Homeplus, located 5 subway stations from CJ

I spent about 40,000 won (S$50) on groceries there, so this week i had 4 home-cooked meals! Jen is such an able chef, haha. She has the skill of learning by watching (her mum/maid) and doing. So far, i’ve learnt how to fry gyozas!

Crispy gyozas!

We also went to the Seoul World Cup Stadium last Sunday to watch a soccer match between FC Seoul and Jeonbok Motors. It was a pretty interesting experience watching the Koreans go ‘aigoooo’ , ‘baili baili’ and do cheers. Unfortunately, FC Seoul lost the game by a single goal.

Today, we went to the Luxury Noraebang again! The service staff there are awesome- cute guys who remember you and say funny things like ‘whoaaaa ice-creammm’ and ‘wo ai ni’. And the best part, they serve free ice-cream! Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. The dynamic duo, Li and Lynn, were totally rocking it out with those Korean songs and moves. 2 hours for only SS6! K-box in Singapore is way too expensive, ain’t it.

Happy smiles after all that noraebang goodness

Plans for tomorrow: Cook lunch. Go to church at Ichon for 4pm service. Eat dinner outside. Do readings.

And oh i almost forgot! I went for a manicure, whoohoo. S$18 for funky green nails with white polka-dots. Hahaha. Just in case you guys think my life in Korea is all fun, it isn’t! School here isn’t slack. It’s somewhat similar to SMU (projects, mid/final-term exams, essays, class participation) and i’m taking 5 modules this sem, including Beginners’ Korean.  To pass, i still have to study quite a bit i think. Oh well, can’t wait for next weekend! Have a great Sunday. (:

Here’s what happens every Monday to Thursday.

I wake up at 7:45AM to get ready for school since i have 9AM classes everyday. KU has a beautiful campus, with Victorian-like buildings. It’s huge- probably 10 times the size of SMU’s campus.  And i have Korean classes on all 4 days, so school ends at 6:15PM for me.

Korea University

On days when Jen and i feel like cooking, we cook! Haha. Wah-la, my very own slightly chao-ta omelette with sausage.  YUMMY. (:

Today wasn’t an ordinary Wednesday though- it snowed! For real this time, meaning there was about 2cm of snow on the ground. Got to be the coldest day of my life yet, and probably one of the most beautiful landscapes i’ve ever seen.

This morning's view from my window

Pretty KU!

KU's Squirrel Path; Word has it that if you're with someone you like, and you both see a squirrel while walking through that pathway, you'll be lovers forever. Haha. Never seen a squirrel there though.

Last, Jen, Tessie, i (and later, Phoebe) went to Hongdae last Friday! After following directions from a blog, we arrived at the Coffee Prince Cafe, where popular Korean drama (1st Shop of Coffee Prince) was filmed!

For fun’s sake, we made a video to capture all the interesting things we saw, did and ate that day. Watch  http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=346795638075&subj=623890621 to find out what else we did! It’s kinda lame, but i hope you guys will enjoy it anyway.  (:

Much love, abi.
p.s. it’s laundry day tmr!

Smashing 1st Week

Hello beloved friends! The blog’s finally up. Awesomeness. Haha okay, where do i begin?

My Korean exchange started with a rather teary walk towards the gate. Like after you wave goodbye to all your AWESOME friends and family looking at you through the glass panels, the feeling of ‘this is it man; can’t turn back now’ really kicked in. But, enough about the goodbyes! Here’s to the start of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. (:

I absolutely love my room! Check out the humongous wardrobe that blew jen and i away. And the kitchenette’s conveniently located opposite our room. We shall start cooking… soon. Ahha. Did i tell you? The food in Korea is fabulous. Perfect for a pig like me. Bibimbap, bulgoggi (bbq-ed beef), ramyeon, cuttlefish, roadside snacks, you name it. 6 days without Macs thanks to cheap and yummilicious Korean food. Finally had to get my hands on some cheeseburger and fries today though.  (:

So the highlights of the week were Lotte World, shopping at Myeong-dong and Ewha. Lotte World has an indoor and outdoor themepark that were sardine-packed. Each ride took 1.5 hours of queueing at least. They were pretty worth it though. Shiok-est ride award goes to the Giant Loop.  I was like laughing and screaming a lot cause sitting upside down in the air kinda has that effect. Hopefully we can go back there again and take the crazy pee-in-my-pants super-drops.  Ahha.

On a sadder note, school starts tomorrow! Almost everyone says KU’s business school is tough. Well, it’s about time i got into mug mode anyway, after 2 months of pure chilling. To my friends back in Singapore, you guys make the best tears-inducing scrapbooks, surprise parties and farewell songs. Thank you all for coming to the airport to send me off. If you’re wondering why i didn’t cry, all i can say is that jumping around and flopping your hands up and down really work well against those tear ducts. 🙂

Lastly, it snowed today! For about 20 minutes. Jen, Phoebe and i were… ecstatic. If you look close enough at the video, there are pretty white flakes dropping from the sky. God is an awesome creator indeed.
